Yakima -- Farmers are on standby since the feds recently announced they're going to screen Washington cherries for possible security threats.

The new rule from the Transportation Security Administration focuses on boxes of cherries exported in the cargo holds of passenger planes. We asked local growers how the program will affect our agriculture and John Thompson says it means more responsibility and more tracking.

"I'm not naive enough to know what happened on 9/11 couldn't happen again it's just a double-edged sword I hope it's happening on the other end of the chain because we receive a lot of imports in too," says John Thompson, Thompson's Farm.

Strawberries and asparagus will also be placed under the new rules, apples and pears will not.
