Updated Flood Maps
By Eileen Park
The great flood of 1996 caught everyone off guard, especially those living in Naches and Gleed. And some residents fear, it will happen again this winter. Tori Hauber, a student at Yakima Valley Community College says "I think '96 could happen again they didn't expect it when it came then, because they had the bad winter and everything... Weather's been kind of finnicky lately."
Tori remembered that her grandmother was medevac'd during the flooding. This time around, Yakima County is taking no chances and partnered with FEMA to create updated virtual maps. Jeff Legg, Program Coordinator of the Surface Water Division in Yakima says, "What these are... are the preliminary flood insurance rate maps that FEMA puts out and it identifies the risks to homeowners and property owners if they are in a flood prone area." The last time these maps were updated was in '86. But the flood in '96 changed the channels of the rivers, making the old maps outdated. |
