That's what "reach out and read" is doing nationwide and they just gave Yakima's branch $4,000 to expand their program. Children coming from lower income families can now catch up with their peers, while getting healthier.

Celina Garza, Parenting Education Coordinator, says "The majority of the children that enter kindergarten are not prepared for kindergarten. A lot has to do with...because they're not exposed to books. They're not exposed to literature and reading and being able to improve their language skills."

The grant will purchase almost 1500 books that doctors and nurses will give to children during check-ups.
