Suspicious Fire Burns 250 Acres at Wallula Junction

WALLA WALLA COUNTY-- More than 250 acres of wildlife land were still burning Saturday evening at Wallula Junction.

Firefighters called the blaze "suspicious." They said they did not know the cause Saturday evening, but they believe it was started by a person.

Three dozen firefighters from around Walla Walla and the Tri-Cities fought the flames. They were called out before noon, and tell Action News they exhausted all their resources.

No structures were threatened, but the blaze ripped through dry brush and Russian Olive trees, destroying the wildlife habitat.

Crews burned fire lines to keep the flames from spreading onto the highway.

"We were driving, and then we just saw a whole bunch of smoke," said 12-year-old Miles Sennett. "We were wondering if it would be a dust storm or something. Then we came here and I saw the big black smoke, and it was kind of scary."

Crews closed North Shore Road and are asking people to stay out of their way.

The fire was about 95 percent contained at one point Saturday afternoon, but wind helped fuel the flames, and crews lost control of the blaze.

They expect it to burn through the night.

Firefighters were also fighting another fire near Glenwood Saturday at 6:00 PM. They say it was an agricultural burn that got out of control.
