Dedication Ceremony For New Med School
By Valerie Hurst
YAKIMA--
Hundreds of people came to see Yakima's first medical school open its doors. "For those who could not believe or have a heart that a university and medical school could find its roots here in Yakima Valley, I would simply say, look around you, isn't this magnificent?" Dr. Stan Flemming says from the podium. Seventy-five students and 25 faculty members will start a new generation of learning at the Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences. Orientation starts next month! Students at the new college of osteopathic medicine will train in family practice medicine. Governor Gregoire's husband "first Mike" was there for the ceremonies today. We checked in with Yakima Transit to see how plans are going to get a public bus out there. Right now, it only goes as far as Wal-Mart--that's two miles from the university. Transit manager Ken Mehin says he's tried twice now to get funding from various sources. It's just not working out. We're talking $55,000... the university can't afford the whole project. He says it's a need that will have to be addressed in the near future. |
