CLEVELAND, Wash. -- A small community in rural Klickitat County learned they are not immune to the dangers of the 21st Century. A shooting Tuesday morning took the life of an elderly man, and left another in critical condition.

The small community of Cleveland, just outside of Bickleton, is still trying to figure out how an apparent argument between two men on Tuesday morning turned deadly.

"I've been in Klickitat County for approximately 30 years, the small community of Cleveland here is a very quiet community of about 20 immediate residents, probably 40 residents within a few mile distance," said Rick McComas, Klickitat County Sheriff. "Very unusual for any situation like this to occur."

And investigators are still examining the crime scene. The 100 block of Lee street is where the UPS driver first arrived on the scene at 11:15 Tuesday morning. The driver arrived at the scene at the same time as one of the victim's wives, and proceeded to call for medical help.

Norman Luening, the 79 year old owner of the house was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head. And Ronald Carlson, a 53 year old man who lives nearby had critical injuries, and was taken to Klickitat Valley Hospital and then flown to Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.

Officials don't know what lead to the shooting, but don't believe the community to be in danger.

"We are not looking, actively, for any other individuals," said Sheriff McComas. "There is no reason to believe there was anyone else involved other than these two."

The WSP Crime Laboratory is assisting the Klickitat's Sheriff's Office with the investigation as the community of Cleveland waits for answers.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Klickitat Sheriff's Office.
