Patrolling The Reservation
By Valerie Hurst
YAKIMA-
Recently the Sheriff's office sent a harsh message reminding everyone it is not legal to have fireworks on the reservation unless you're a bona fide tribal member. The sheriff said his deputies would be on the res looking for violators. We found fireworks stand owners didn't know about the law. Some worried for their sales. The office says it wants you to understand deputies will be on the res... But only to patrol non-sovereign property--like roadways. They don't mess with trust land. Tribal cops can get you in trouble by calling in Sheriff's deputies if they choose. |
