Fire damages Terrace Heights landfill

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. -- Investigators aren't sure what started a fire at the Terrace Heights transfer station. Trash caught fire early Monday morning.

Firefighters said everything was watered down by the time they got there.

The fire was reported by someone who saw smoke from afar.

There was no one in the building when the fire started.

Trash will be dumped at a different spot on the site instead.

"When we deal with garbage, a lot of times it's warm coming in, the faster we can get it into trucks and up to the face of the landfill, the less chance for fire we have," said Yakima County Solid Waste Manager Wendy Mifflin.

It could take a few days to assess repairs.
