2-alarm fire causes $1 million in damage to Olympia apartments

2-alarm fire causes $1 million in damage to Olympia apartments
OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Ten apartment units were heavily damaged in a 2-alarm fire that broke out early Thursday morning.

Firefighters were called to Olympia's Bellwether Apartments in the 1400 block of Fones Road SE around 12:30 a.m. and found flames shooting from the ground floor to the roof of a three-story building, said Deputy Chief Greg Wright with the Olympia Fire Department.

It took firefighters about 30 minutes to get the blaze under control.

Everyone inside managed to escape to safety, but two cats did not survive, Wright said. One person was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor smoke inhalation.

Investigators are still looking into what started the fire. Damage is estimated at over $1 million.

Wright says the Red Cross is helping those whose units were damaged by the blaze.
