City's Gas Budget Could Affect Your Wallet
By Valerie Hurst
You can run, but you can't hide.
Well--if you're running, you don't need gas. But without a car, you probably depend on the city of Yakima to get you around. And the city's cutting corners where it can to keep from raising prices. Remember the fight to put more officers on the streets? And the annexed property Yakima took on? That means more cop cars in use and more gas, to get help to you on time. Yakima police tell Action News when they can, they're doubling up. In the last year, Yakima Transit's seen more than a 10 percent jump in riders. Part of that's the added routes to Selah and Union Gap. Either way, it's eaten up more than a third of its budget for gas already! You may see the cost to ride go up by a quarter or so. We met one bus rider who may ride that bike more often. "I have an old school car so it takes a lot for it to be filled up, costs a lot of money..." (reporter) So you choose to ride your bike and take the bus? "Yeah...I could drive my car, this is a lot easier," Alex Vargas says. Yakima Transit plans to bring up the rising cost to ride at a council meeting in the next couple weeks. We'll let you know if the fare does go up. City spokesman Randy Beehler says rough estimate--if the city did nothing to conserve-- it'd be $300,000 over fuel budget at the end of the year! Employees are carpooling, planning out trips more efficiently, little things make a big difference. Beehler says the city would probably dip into its reserves to help the budget before cutting any service or program. |
