Residents Rage Over Ordinance
By Robin Woodson
YAKIMA -- "It was actually intended for more or less abandoned vehicles, yet their targeting the regular people who don't have a place to park," Yakima Resident, Lyndell Raphael, said.
He says he feels like a target. "The ordinance isn't doing what the people really expected it to do," he added. Raphael claims it's the City that's targeting him. He says when the City passed an ordinance banning cars from parking on lawns, he backed up the decision. At the time, he says he thought it was a good way to wipe out abandoned cars in town. Until, the City came after him. "I was told I could actually be ticketed for washing my car on the grass or as far as that goes, he even said unloading groceries," Raphael explained. He tells me Action News, lately, he feels the City's rules are getting out of hand. But that's not all, he says on a street where most of his neighbors are clearly breaking the rules, he's the only one facing the consequences. So he's taking his case to the council, requesting they amend the ordinance. "I believe the City has other things that need to be attended to first before they deal with people's private property," Raphael said. Across town, another homeowner had the same idea. The homeowner told Action News over the phone, he's voiced his opinion to the Council at the last meeting. He claims the City is infringing on his rights by telling him what to do with his property. "It's targeting the wrong people, you know, it's targeting the good people of Yakima and it's not targeting the people that have the abandoned vehicles and stuff," Raphael said. City code officers can write you a $250 ticket if you keep parking on the lawn. But that usually doesn't come unless you get at least 3 written warnings first. The City's code department tells Action News, more than 200 residents have gotten warnings about parking on the lawn. So far, only one of those may get fined. Raphael says he plans on talking to the City at tomorrow night's Council meeting. |
