Media Attention On School Threats: How Much?
By Valerie Hurst
In just the last week or so we've seen three school death threats in the valley.
Last week started with a note found in a bathroom threatening a shooting at YVCC. Yakima cops are still investigating, but no leads. Then two separate threats again in a bathroom at Naches high. Two teens were arrested. Today in juvenile court they made their parents cry. Cops say the teens admitted making the hoax. They caused a lot of needless anxiety for students, faculty, and the community... We asked YPD Captain Greg Copeland today about media coverage on these issues. We wanted to know if we should still report these stories. "We'll hear comments about, 'Why are you guys giving interviews to the media about this kind of a thing?' But you know, it's an open society the media can report on what it's gonna report on, so sometimes we don't have a lot of say on that," Copeland says. (Reporter) "How about help from the media? How are we a help to you?" "Very often especially when we have a wanted person we're looking for. There've been several instances in the past where we've been able to put someone's face in the media and we have immediate results we find out who they are where they are and we're able to make an arrest very quickly. So it's very good sometimes," Copeland replies. Copeland says some of these kids want the media attention. But others make threats because they have their own grudges with the school or some person. The two Naches high teens will be formally charged Wednesday. Both were sent home with parents. Only one is accused of writing the notes.
