Selah Hands Over More Documents on Former Selah Police Chief
By Maria Medina
SELAH -- Action News wanted to know what had been going on behind closed doors between city leaders and the former police chief in the months leading up to his resignation -- so under the Freedom of Information Act, KIMA made a public records request for all documents of communication between the two parties in the last year -- but discovered documents were missing from the city's reply.
Action News filed the request with the city of Selah on April 10th. Five days later, the city faxed Action News 10 pages and wrote in a cover letter that the request had been honored. But Action News noticed two pieces of paper not included in the city's fax. One of them: former police chief Rick Gutierrez's resignation letter that the Mayor of Selah mentioned to Action News in an interview last month. "I got them (Gutierrez's resignation letter) late Tuesday afternoon," said Selah Mayor Bob Jones last month. "One and a half sentence that he would like to seek employment elsewhere." Action News called the city again and pointed out the missing document. It was faxed over to us right away. But Action News also knew there was an email between the chief and the city supervisor about the police dispatcher's position, that was given to dispatcher Janine Beghtol when she made a public records request on herself. The city hadn't given KIMA that piece of paper as well. After two missing documents, it made Action News wonder what else the city might have left out. On Monday, KIMA got the answer: more than 100 pages of communication between the city and the chief were handed over to Action News. The city promised to send the rest of the request in the next week. The city also said since this happened, the city of Selah will make the clerk's office pull records requests instead of having each department do it. Under FOIA, anyone can make a public records request. An agency has five days to respond to whether it'll provide the documents or deny the request. |
