KITTITAS, Wash. -- Investigators said a 17-year-old student left school and shot himself in a barn before returning to school later that morning. Two Kittitas school were put on a precautionary lockdown as authorities investigated.
The wounded student was rushed to a hospital and was listed in stable condition, according to the Washington State Patrol.
He was later transferred to a Western Washington hospital. His condition has been upgraded to satisfactory.
School staff immediately initiated lockdown procedures and called local law enforcement agencies, which responded and secured and searched both the Secondary School and the nearby Elementary School to verify that no further threats were present.
Roadblocks were set up and a perimeter was established around the residential development where the shooting was believed to have occurred.
The school lockdown was later lifted, and normal after-school activities will resume this evening, said Principal Chris Brower. School will be on regular schedule on Friday.
