YAKIMA -- A driver who got high just before he killed an off-duty sheriff's deputy in a car crash last summer was sentenced to nearly two years in jail Friday.

Sean Kearney received 20 months in jail for causing a wreck that killed Sgt. Peter Garland of Klickitat County.

Kearney passed a semi-truck in a no-passing zone on Highway 97 south of Toppenish when he hit Garland. Investigators said Kearney was going 80 miles an hour.

Garland was promoted to sergeant just months before he died.
