City fires employee who admitted taking $5,500 from police account

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A city employee was fired after they admitted to taking funds from a Yakima Police Department account, officials announced Thursday.

A state audit revealed a $5,500 shortfall in the department's home detention fund. An employee, who the department is not identifying at this time, was being placed on unpaid administrative leave. A city investigation found the employee was responsible for the missing money.

Police said the employee admitted to taking funds from the account.

The case is now in the hand's of the prosecutor's office. Charges of 1st degree theft were recommended.
