YAKIMA, Wash. -- A man is dead in what Yakima police are calling an officer-involved shooting. We learned the man was  55-year-old Joseph Ricard of Yakima. The shooting has a connection to a bloody hotel room in Lewis County

A cleaning crew at the Cowlitz River Lodge found a large amount of blood in one of the rooms. Deputies in Lewis County learned Ricard was the guest in that room and contacted Yakima Police around 10 a.m. Wednesday.

When police went to Ricard's home at 1000 block of N. 34th Ave. they found him in his back yard with a rifle.

"There were shots fired by both the officer and the individual they were contacting," said Yakima Police Captain Rod Light.

Ricard eventually put the gun to his head and killed himself.

"Officer involved shooting, no never in this neighborhood," said neighbor Leo Baldt. "Would have never guessed it in a million years."

No officers where hurt in the shooting.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

It's unclear what happened in that hotel room in Lewis County.
