New Wapato High School construction behind schedule

WAPATO, Wash. -- You called us concerned about construction of the new Wapato High School. We learned the 43 million dollar project got off to a rocky start when the school found more asbestos than expected.
We also learned the district's construction budget bid was two million dollars over budget. The district responded by scaling back some design features, like landscaping and paved parking lots. However the changes doesn't completely cover the two million needed in savings.
The district says some of the eliminated features could eventually end up being included if there is unspent contingency money, at the end of the project.
"All that we found was asbestos that we couldn't see or determine where it was," said Wapato High School Spokesperson Mike Bamelli. "It was under concrete pads and around piping - that type of thing. So, that slowed the process down during the demolition phase."
Construction on Wapato High is five to six weeks behind schedule.
