Sunnyside teachers suspended. District has no comment
SUNNYSIDE, Wash. -- Action News learned two Sunnyside High School teachers are suspended and under investigation for using inappropriate teaching materials.
Parents contacted us and said they were concerned, so KIMA went straight to the Sunnyside School District.
They summed it up with a "no comment" and wouldn't confirm or deny the information we uncovered.
To get all sides Action News reached out to the teacher's union, but they said they had not heard about the suspensions until we called.
We also called one of the teachers but have not heard back.
Action News confirmed one of the teachers was put on leave about a week and a half ago.
Sources said the material provided to students was not appropriate.
A local minister said the behavior should not be tolerated.
"It destroys moral values," Regner Capener, a minister in Sunnyside. "It destroys trust. It's like, if the adults are promoting this, where do we stand?"
KIMA filed a public records requests to gain access to whatever is available in this investigation.
Until then, Action News will make sure the district is revealing everything the public is allowed to know.
The reading material was not inappropriate. I am one of those students that is in that class and the poems were appropriate. They are good teachers. They actually prepare us for the real world and don't try to sugar coat the real world like other teachers. It is actually harder on us students going substitute through substitute and this whole "problem" is effecting OUR learning. So just bring Back both teachers and stop making a big deal out of it. The administrators say we are adults so they should treat us like one.
@Sunnyside13oss you know, even turds can be sugar coated.
The word of a minister is  the only opinion offered?? What do the students think of the material?
It was a poem that the teacher gave her students that is titled "I ate fig newtons until I puked".
Well, you can bet it wasn't a bible.
I'm really curious as to what the "inappropriate" teaching materials were.
@Jenny Clinkenbeard The title was "I ate fig Newtons unil I puked" .
