SUNNYSIDE, Wash. -- Sunnyside's city manager says his reason for suddenly resigning is simply that it was time to retire.

Mark Gervasi made the announcement at last night's city council workshop. He says he wants to spend more time with his family.
Gervasi has been Sunnyside's city manager for just more than a year.
His announcement was a surprise to everyone including the deputy city manager.
"Mark has not shared anything with me that it is [anything] other than his desire that he thinks that he's ready to retire at this point in his life," said Byron Olson, deputy city manager.
Gervasi won't be leaving until April. He says he plans on moving back to Oregon.
