Looking for a job in Yakima? Try airplane manufacturing
YAKIMA -- KIMA learned one business is literally taking things to the next level.
The numbers point to hard times for Yakima's unemployed. In just one month, unemployment surged by more than one percent. Fortunately, Action News learned one manufacturer is bucking that trend.
You may not guess it, but a business tucked away on the corner of the Yakima airport is flying to new heights. Cub Crafters is expanding big.
The plant manufactures unique, personal airplanes.
Each one is built in Yakima, making the need for workers all the more necessary.
Owner Randy Lervold says the plant has 100 employees, but is currently looking for a lot more.
"Even though we're in a down industry, we're actually doing pretty well," he tells KIMA.
It comes amid rising unemployment in Yakima. Just this week, a restaurant business closed two of its locations in town, possibly leaving dozens of people without a job.
Cub Crafters is fighting that trend. Due to recent expansions, they're looking to hire 15 to 20 people in the coming months.
The new jobs range from manufacturing and engineering to management. While more people are out of a job, national economists expect 160,000 jobs to be created each month in 2012.
Lervold says it's a trend Cub Crafters feels fortunate to be part of and hopes it will lead to more workers in the Valley.
