ELLENSBURG -- Students at the middle school in Ellensburg are learning new ways to work out and be healthy. It's all according to their heart rate.

Running and jumping around isn't enough. Kids are now strapping on watches and heart rate monitors to keep track of their fitness. P.E. teachers say it's a way to guarantee students are getting enough cardiovascular exercise. The watches account for a big portion of students' grades.

"They definitely help you," says student, Dillon Lawson. "If you're doing sports, you know what your heart rate is and it gives you a good reference."

The equipment was paid for by a grant, but the school has to pay for upkeep and repairs. The school board set aside money in the budget for the maintenance.
