Governor Gregoire petitions feds to reclassify pot
WASHINGTON - Washington Governor Chris Gregoire is making a big push for medical marijuana.
She filed a petition with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to reclassify the drug.
It calls for the DEA to categorize marijuana as a "Schedule 2" drug.
The move would make it legal for doctors to prescribe and let pharmacies fill the prescriptions.
This comes as Yakima moves ahead with a planning amendment to address medical marijuana gardens in the city with the current moratorium about to expire.
"Any use that is illegal under local state or federal law would not be allowed within the city. The effect of that would be to not allow collective gardens with the city at this point," said City Attorney Mark Kunkler.
Current state law lets doctors recommend medical marijuana, but they can't prescribe it.
A public hearing on Yakima's proposal will be held in December.
