Sunnyside grant for auto theft set to expire
SUNNYSIDE - Sunnyside Police won't get any more grant money for a program to cut down on stolen cars.
The department used the grant money to pay for things like free steering wheel locks, education and more enforcement.
Police say the grants helped cut stolen car reports by 80 percent since 2008.
Officers say car theft remains a problem during cold months when people leave cars unlocked without knowing it's against city law.
"People do know and understand that they could receive a ticket for that and so they're pretty well versed in how to keep their cars safe and that was definitely our goal," said traffic safety manager Edica Esqueda.
The three-year grants were worth $220,000.
