WAPATO -- KIMA spoke with Wapato Schools Superintendent Becky Imler about the Governor's proposed budget, which calls for a major
cut in education funding.

Imler says the district already made major cuts in recent years. If the district lost its levy equalization, the district would suffer a major blow.

"We've cut a number of staff members and we've cut back in some of our programs," Imler said. "We've made some really difficult decisions already. I would hate for us to continue to have to make those, and that's the discussion that would have to occur."

The Wapato School District serves about 3,400 students. Because of high poverty rates and a lack of taxable land, the district relies heavily on its levy equalization and the millions of dollars it generates.

Imler says she's open to the governor's proposal of shaving four school days from the calendar in an effort to save money as long as the district keeps the levy equalization.
