YAKIMA – Our city’s Crime Free Housing program has proven successful to the point that our Washington’s Attorney General wanted to see it up close and personal.

Rob McKenna was in Yakima Tuesday night to get the lowdown on how our local landlords and tenants are keeping criminals away from their front door. KIMA talked to some of the near 80 property owners and landlords who came to the training, all with one common goal - booting the gang bangers and crooks from Yakima's rentals.

"I think we need tools to allow landlords to evict people who are engaged in criminal activity while renting from them,” said Attorney General Rob McKenna. “I think landlords need to be accountable as well. (We need to) make sure those who are law abiding and protected, and the neighborhoods are protected.”

"(We) need to take an active part,” said Landlord Jan Hutchinson. “Those who do are going to see a big difference. They have to do their own. They have to help themselves. Police can't do it all."

There are three more crime free sessions for the participating landlords in the next week. They'll learn more about the role of the sheriff's office in evictions, warning signs of drug use, and the legality of it all.
