Downtown Toppenish Revitalization Picking Up Speed
TOPPENISH - Action News has been following the revitalization efforts of many lower valley cities.
And we've learned a downtown rehab program in Toppenish is finally picking up speed.
It matches up to 50-percent of a business's repair costs with grants.
So far this year, six businesses have taken advantage of the program.
Owners can use the money for roofs, windows, even pumping repairs.
A year ago, only one business showed interest.
The city hopes the increased interest will mean an eventual boom for downtown businesses.
"Entice people to stay rather than finding a newer builder somewhere else," said Bill Rathbone, who heads the program at city planning. "And then leaving this as an abandoned, vacant building."
Businesses interested in fixing up shop, can contact city planning.
So far the city has matched about half the 66,000 dollars used to fix-up downtown.
