As the pursuit entered the Yakima City limits officers with the Yakima police department engaged in the pursuit. The fleeing suspect led officers to a location in the 400 block of East “E” street where he stopped his car. As soon as the responding officers stopped their cars in order to make an arrest the suspect began firing multiple rounds at multiple officers. The officers returned fire and continued to fire until the suspect stopped firing his weapon. Officers then approached the suspect car and found the suspect in the car still holding on to an AR-15 assault rifle. The suspect failed to comply with commands to drop the weapon. Officers entered the car and secured the weapon. The suspect was then pulled from the car by officers and handcuffed. Aid units were called to care for the suspect, who was ultimately transported to an area hospital to receive treatment for multiple gunshot wounds.
The suspect was undergoing surgery at the time of this release. He was the sole occupant in the stolen car.
Three Yakima Police officers and one Toppenish Police officer fired rounds during the incident.
