Tieton Snow Trouble

TIETON -- KIMA has learned the relationship between city leaders in Tieton and some tax payers has frozen over. The dispute is over snow removal rights. A new ordinance prohibits anyone from shoveling the snow into the street. Some are asking for a little flexibility. But Action News discovered, the city simply isn't interested.

Those living along Franklin Road have nowhere to shovel their sidewalk snow except into the street. A new city ordinance makes that illegal. Neighbors like Chuck McIntyre say they've tried to tell the city there are more than 100 school children who use this sidewalk. Every time he clears it, city plows push the snow right back onto the sidewalk.

"I really do think this slides in the face of their own mission statement in terms of trying to help out and trying to reflect pride in the community," says McIntyre.

These taxpayers are just asking for a little flexibility. Particularly since the city itself isn't even following the letter of the law. One city councilman, Dewane Ashbrooks says the city does not enforce the ordinance due to lack of man power. However, McIntrye and Welch have been threatened with fines.

It is clear that relations between the city and these tax payers will not be thawing until the two sides start working together. Action News asked the mayor about the issue he said simply, "No comment".
