Yakima Police Chief Announces Resignation

YAKIMA -- Yakima's Chief of Police Chief announced his resignation Wednesday. After several weeks of negotiation, Sam Granato and the city of Yakima have made a settlement. His resignation will take effect on January 1, 2011.

The settlement includes a severance pay of $100,000 and an agreement that the city will not pursue any litigation against Granato after he leaves, and in turn, Granato will not sue the city.

It's not clear yet whether the Granato will be working through that day or if he'll use vacation or sick leave time until then.

Assistant City Manager Dave Zabell says Granato actually stayed in Yakima two years longer than he'd planned.

Last year, Granato made the short list for the chief of police position in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The city will announce an interim chief on Friday and look for temporary chief from outside the police department in the coming weeks.

The search for a permanent replacement for Granato will not begin until after the strong mayor issue vote in February or a new city manager is hired.
