New Code Ordinance in Grandview
GRANDVIEW - Grandview is getting tough on homeowners who don't take care of their property. City council approved a new ordinance that could have residents paying hundreds of dollars for weeds and other code violations. It could even land them in jail.
Homeowners will now get a notice, giving them ten days to get the mess cleaned up, or face a fine up to $200. A second notice will up the fine to as much as $500. Miss that deadline and you could get 90 days in jail. Some think that's a little harsh.
" The ones that should be in there are out strolling the streets, the ones who shouldn't, for minor violations. I think the 90 days in jail is a bit extreme for weeds though," said Grandview resident, Pat Bratton.
Building official, Corey Taylor doesn't think he'll see anyone go to jail over this. But he says it will be a lot easier for the city, because now these notices will give him a paper trail that could push it through the courts much faster. The first notices will be given to problem property owners later this week.
