Deputies say 69-year-old Antonio Carmona-Vazquez, Wapato, was heading north on North Track Road when he apparently lost control of his car. It happened around 5:30 Thursday evening in Wapato.
The car ripped through a guardrail and went flying off the road.
Authorities say the man was trapped under water for some time. He was the only person in the car. Deputies say he was given CPR and is still in critical condition.
"He actually went through the guard rail and under the water. Unfortunately it's a bad spot that he went into."
Pancho Castillo lives nearby and tells KIMA he was in his front yard when the accident suddenly unfolded before his eyes.
"It looked like he had just gone on the bridge and just flipped over in a hurry,” Pancho said.
Pancho says Track Road and surrounding areas are a hot spot for accidents.
“I've lived here for 26 years and I've seen lots of accidents,” Pancho said. “I've called a lot of them in."
Multiple agencies were at the scene for hours, gathering evidence and trying to figure out how this tragic accident happened.
Deputies have not determined a cause of the accident and can’t confirm if speed or alcohol played a role in the accident.
