Boy shot in leg at Terrace Heights home

YAKIMA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE NEWS RELEASE -- On July 06, 2014 at approx. 01:08 hours the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call, in the 400 block of Santa Roza Dr, Yakima WA, of a person yelling for help and stating he/she had been shot.

A 17 year old male was soon located in a yard in the 300 block of Santa Roza Dr with a gun-shot wound to his lower left leg.  Medical aid was requested and later transported the male to Memorial Hospital.  The male was then transported to Harborview Hospital for surgery.  While the wound is very serious it is not believed to be life threatening.

While investigating the incident, Deputies learned that an 18 year old male was house sitting in the 400 block of Santa Roza Dr. and heard noises coming from the carport of the residence.  The 18 year old covertly went outside and discovered two males prowling his vehicle, which was parked in the driveway.  The 18 year old returned to the residence and armed himself with a rifle.   He then returned to his vehicle and confronted the two males who were still in and at his vehicle.  Both suspects began to flee the area with items taken from the 18 year old’s vehicle.  The 18 year old fired one shot from the rifle striking one of the suspects in the lower left leg.  The 18 year old then returned to his residence to secure the weapon and call 911.  During this time the 18 year old heard the injured male yelling for help and after securing the weapon located the male and rendered aid until medics arrived.  Deputies were unable to locate the second suspect.  The 18 year old stated he heard a vehicle leave at a high rate while he was securing the rifle, but no description was available at this time.  As earlier stated, the 17 year old was flown to Harborview and the 18 year old was released.  Statements were taken from both individuals but no charges have been filed at this time.
