Grandview Soldier Honored

GRANDVIEW -- A 21 gun salute marked the solemn start to Grandview's homecoming game.

A night, in which people remembered Matt Emerson.

Friends, family and Veterans honored the local soldier who was recently killed in Iraq.

"He was kind of quiet, but a leader by example. You would look at him and be like, Oh, I want to be like him," Former teammate and friend, Matt Concienne said.

Matt Emerson is being remembered for many things tonight.

He's a graduate of Grandview High School, former cornerback for the school's football team, and now, Town Hero.

Matt's childhood friend, Chris Mejia, explained, "I actually felt like I lost a family member, cause he was that close to us. He was more than a best friend, he was like a brother."

After high school Matt left the football field and 2 years later was deployed to the field of combat, where he paid the ultimate price.

"When I first heard it, it was like chills that just went down my body and just got that knot in your stomach," Concienne added.

After spending years in the stands cheering on Matt, Emerson's parents were overcome by others tributing him.

"Well, Matt was very patriotic and he loved his country, and this would have meant a lot to him," Matt Emerson's mom, Ginger Emerson said.

Matt Emerson's senior class from when he was a student at Grandview, will also be planting a tree and placing a plaque on campus in memory of him.

Emerson's funeral is Tuesday at the Church of Nazarene in Grandview.
