YAKIMA --- A former Davis High school student has been shot and killed in Las Vegas. He had just returned home after his shift as a Las Vegas Police Officer, when he was gunned down in his garage.

"I thought his career would last 20 years, now it's cut short," his father, Richard Nettleton said.

30-year-old Trevor Nettleton was shot and killed just after midnight. His garage door was still open after returning home from a swing shift with the Las Vegas Police Department. Investigators say the officer did fire back at his killers before he died.

"He appears to just be a random victim of a couple bad guys that drove down the street and observed him in his garage and came back and approached him," Las Vegas Metro Undersheriff, Rod Jett announced in front of the North Las Vegas house.

Nettleton worked for Las Vegas Police three years, and served in the Marine Corp for seven years before that. He went to grade school, middle school, and high school in Yakima and played baseball and football.

"He got married here 3 years ago, had a beautiful son, daughter that just was born two months ago. He was always concerned about other people, and then other people took his life," Richard Nettleton sighed.

He had a year and a half year old son son and a two month old daughter.

"We were talking, Trevor got one Christmas with his son and he won't get any with his daughter," his Step Mother, Frances Nettleton told Action News.

North Las Vegas Police are still investigating the crime. The department plans to honor Nettleton as being killed in the line of duty. Police say they have the 18-year-old shooter in custody. He's being treated for a gunshot wound suffered when Nettleton fired back. A 19-year old is also in custody. Both are being charged with murder.
