Program is Safe at least 6 Months
By Stacy Lilienthal
Yakima --- It's a program to help people out of jail and safely onto the streets, and it was up to the Yakima City Council to decide whether or not to keep it.
The Behavioral Health Diversion Program ran out of grant money in June. The program gives people with mental or drug problems in Yakima County treatment instead of jail time. It also trains police and probation officers on how to work with those people. The county agreed to chip in 84 thousand for it. Now the city will pay 66 thousand to keep a pilot program of it running the next 6 months. |
