Mandatory Uniforms for Grandview School
By Ryan Simms
GRANDVIEW -- Going back to school is a bit more bland in Grandview this year.
In Grandview, Compass High School has become one of Yakima County's newest schools requiring students to wear uniforms. It's all part of a program to help students be more responsible. As part of the new rules, any student not dressed in a uniform will be sent home. "There's a phrase 'clothes make the man'. We think a lot of things will follow that if we get the kids looking good," says Brian Anderson, principal of Compass High School. Compass is the only school in the Grandview School District to require students to wear uniforms. Unlike other uniformed schools in Yakima County, students are allowed to wear only one color. According to Anderson, one of the incentives of having uniforms is that students will not be spending hundreds of dollars on clothes for the new school year. While students may be paying less, some are having a tough time adjusting to the mandatory rules. "I do not want to be a robot, I want to be myself," says student Steven Hurt. In the end, Principal Anderson believes uniforms will not only help students to perform better academically, but it will also make them better citizens. |
