Forest Service To Pay Couple Trapped In 30-Mile
The U.S. Forest service will pay a couple from Thorp an undisclosed amount of money after they were trapped in the 30-Mile Fire during a camping trip.
Lawyers for Bruce and Paula Hagemeyer said the Forest Service did not close roads near the fast-moving forest fire, allowing the couple to set up camp near the flames. When the couple smelled smoke and tried to leave the area, they were trapped with fire crews.
The family's lawyer, Mariano Morales said the crews did not help the Hagemeyers, but one firefighter offered them a fire shelter as the flames passed over. Morales said this is the first time the U.S. Forest Service has settled a private negligence suit.
