Young Plane Crash Survivor's Story
By Melissa Wagner
She survived the plane crash that killed her father and brother. That in itself is a miracle. But this week, another miracle. Five year old Julie Reed came home.
When KIMA arrived at the Reed's home, Julie was busy playing video games with her brother. She was laughing and looked like your typical five year old. But when you look closer you can see the exhaustion in her eyes. She still has a long way to go. "She's pretty tired, so she's been sleeping a lot," said Natisha Reed, Julie's mom. You'd expect nothing less after what Julie went through. An afternoon flight with her dad and brother over Rimrock Lake turned to tragedy when the plane crash while her dad was trying to land. Julie was the only one to survive. She doesn't remember much of the accident. "We haven't really grilled her to see what she remembers and I don't think it's necessary. it's hard enough to know how she's feeling about missing her dad and her brother." Julie lived, but didn't come out unscathed. She has two broken legs. One has pins, the other has a metal plate. Months of physical therapy are ahead after the casts come off. Doctors don't know when that will be. Julie may also need surgery to repair small fractures to her face. You can't see them, but the broken bones are there. And so is the pain. "I just got stitches after my dad crashed," said Julie. And that's all she'll say about it. Right now she's more focused on playing video games with her stepbrother, Brian. And going to kindergarten in the fall. Natisha said, "I've been told so many times that kids are resilient. And I think she'll do ok." Julie's stepbrother, Perrin's, funeral is on July 10th. Her dad's funeral is the next day. The family still needs help to cover the costs of those funerals and Julie's medical needs. An account as been set up at Yakima Federal, under the kid's names. Justin Reed was also working on several home projects when he died. Enigma Marketing, where Natisha works, is putting together a volunteer list to help finish those projects. email Quinton Coulter for more information: quentin@enigmamarketing.com |
