It's illegal to walk around with an open container in Wapato. But there's been a change to the current law.

It's now more than a fine. It would be a misdemeanor that could get you jail time. "It's up to you to decide," advises Wapato Police Chief, Richard Sanchez, "If you want to keep doing what you're doing, you suffer the consequences. There are consequences in life and everybody has to understand that."

Wapato city leaders voted for the crackdown. Since then, several groups contacted the police department with ideas. It's possible in the future people may be offered a less severe punishment in exchange for going to rehab.
