Wapato School District Turning Away Students?
By Sade Malloy
Wapato -- The state's bad budget is really hitting some local schools. For the Wapato School District it could mean certain kids may not be welcomed back next year.
The Wapato School District is sending out "choice" letters to students in out-of-bounds areas. Basically the students have to fill out an application for the next school year. It's a letter that's got some parents upset but the school district says it's a practice that's been going on since the '90s. This year the process is just more formalized. "They say what's up with this? My kids come here forever. Than we say thank you, we appreciate you coming in we'd like to have you fill out the form now," says Dr. Charles Wheaton, Wapato School District. Wheaton tells us 150 students come into the school district every year that are outside district bounds. |
