Illegal Dump Site: More Than One Culprit?
By Audrey Asistio
GRANDVIEW -- It has been several days since an illegal dumping site in Grandview was discovered. The more investigators dig, the more they are finding. They have already unearthed 130 toxic containers, and they are not finished digging.
U.S. EPA Emergency Response Coordinator,Jeffrey Fowlow explained, "We've found a golf cart, we've found computer monitors, we've seen furniture, wood debris from construction, debris kind of stuff, general paper, food waste." Investigators believe there are more dump sites on the property. They are still uncertain what kind of toxins they are dealing with, and who was dumping on the site. "It appears that it comes from various places. We're seeing containers that would indicate agricultural business and we're also seeing household debris and just general waste, so it kind of appears it might be two different places or several different places," added Fowlow. Neighbors in the area are getting restless. Some are occasionally stopping by the site and wondering if their well-water has been contaminated. Neighbor Daniel Bussert told Action News, "At this point in time, we're probably on the same water table, so, what have we got? I've come looking for some answers." Investigators do not know yet if surrounding water wells are affected. They recommend neighbors get their wells tested. |
