Revitalizing Downtown Grandview
By Audrey Asistio
GRANDVIEW -- It could take a village to keep the streets clean! Mayor Pro-tem, Pam Horner tries to do her part all the time. Before getting ready for her interview, she stopped to pick up an empty wrapper in Downtown Grandview . It’s an area that has been the focus of a face lift for a while now. A couple of things on the revitalization plan is to widen up the downtown area’s sidewalks, replace all of their old light poles and add a lot more greenery to the area. Horner and several council members just visited Washington D.C., where they pitched the plan to senators and representatives, in hopes of generating money. Horner explained, "We're very fortunate and very blessed that our reps and senator spent some time letting us talk about the project."
For the most part, Horner says the trip was a success. The senators plan to put it on their agenda next year. But they are still low on funding. "They were very responsive very supportive. The issue is just the whole financial crisis within our state and within our federal government," said Horner. The revitalization plan will cost about three million dollars to complete. Grandview city council already has half of the expense saved. During construction, the project would generate approximately 50 jobs. Once it is completed, it should generate an additional 80 permanent jobs. Horner says despite the money shortage, they think the trip to Washington D.C. made all the difference. "We're on the radar screen, that's the main thing," said Horner. Grandview city council aims to start the downtown revitalization project Summer 2009, and finish it sometime in 2010. |
