Bargain Store Going Bust?
Tieton -- The discount store has two things going for it, it's the main store in Tieton and it's a bargain. They claim they can cut your bill by half, so why is this store in danger of shutting down?
Discount stores mean big business for locals on a budget, but business isn't booming for the Tieton General Store. "You can shop here on a budget you can get canned food, coffee, I've gotten furniture here," says Vickie St. Martin, customer.
Instead of customers coming in, their customers are staying out, which means the store is losing money and you're missing a good deal. "You don't have to go to Yakima to save 20 cents when you've wasted $5 in gas and an hour of your time," says Jackie Williams, Tieton General Store.
Jackie Williams says their prices are lower than Yakima's and instead of that one-hour roundtrip drive to town, you could have shopped locally and saved 50 percent on everyday items. Damaged packaging that would be hard to sell at normal retail stores is part of the reason behind their low prices. The store also buys overstock merchandise and products that've had their packaging changed. "The more options the better to go and shop with your kids and browse," says Matt Harris, customer.
But the deals might disappear if business doesn't pick up. Employees say their bills aren't adding up and their rent and electricity is around $1,600 a month. Jackie Williams, Tieton General Store says, "When you're only clearing $80 a day, that doesn't do anything."
If the books don't balance they'll be clearing the shelves and clearing out.
