Sex Offenders in School

You know you can find sex offenders on the state's website. But did you know you can also find them in your child's school?

Seventy-Six convicted sex offenders, who are also kids, are living within Yakima’s city limits.

School districts are under no obligation to tell parents when a registered sex offender is sitting at a desk next to their child. Marybeth Wright with the Yakima School District says "By policy we're only to notify our staff on an as needed basis and the information isn't to go any further."

As a concerned parent, Maria Sanchez disagrees with that policy. "I think the parents should have been informed," she says. "I'm sure I'm not the only parent who would like to know what was going on there."

They attend the same classes as your child, eat in the cafeteria and are either on probation or on parole for a sex offense. You try to arm your children with the most information you can to keep them safe from predators. But how can you do that when you're not even aware that they're possibly making friends with one at school?

At Eisenhower High School a level two juvenile sex offender enrolled in classes right after he was released from a residential program. He was thrown right into the mix with the rest of the students, but only lasted two days.

Detective Perry Skipton with the Yakima Police Department explains the student was expelled, "Not anything that has to do with what made him a sex offender, just another rule violation." The juvenile sex offender was first registered as a level 3 offender for sexual assault. He was then arrested again for a supervision violation, sent to the program at Maple Lane, and then re-categorized as a level 2 offender.

So how does a kid on parole for a sex crime get into school? According to the law, they have rights, too. So they simply tell the Sheriff where they want to go.

Skipton says "We want these kids to go to school to help them succeed so there are no restrictions about that unless they're on supervision."

The school's policy is to treat them like any other student, though they are sometimes sent to alternative classes or registered for online studies. Most juvenile sex offenders are listed on the state's sex offender registry website. But don't expect any written notice from your child's school when they enroll. It's up to you as the parent to follow up.
