Aaron Garcia Update
By Melissa Wagner
It was about this time three-years ago that nine men escaped from the county jail. And then in 2006, four-others made their break from the Sunnyside Detention Center. All but one have been caught. It seems there's something about thanksgiving. "It's the holiday season, so they don't like being locked up in a jail this particular time." More than 65-hundred inmates escaped state prisons in one year's time according to the latest Bureau of Justice statistics. And it seems more of those jail breaks happen around the holidays. In 2005, nine inmates used bed sheets to climb onto the roof of the Yakima County Corrections Center. Five men were caught that same night, the rest in a matter of days. The same thing happened in 1994. And in 2006, 4 men made their break from Sunnyside. And one criminal is still on the loose. "He is a gang member. He is known to carry guns, anyone we spoke to says he carries a gun and plans not to be caught." Aaron Garcia has been on the run for the last two years. US Marshals investigated sightings of Garcia in Colorado, Wyoming and back here in Yakima. But they've all fallen through. They believe he could be west of the Mississippi or in Mexico. Garcia was featured on America's Most Wanted shortly after his escape, and the show plans to air his story again in a couple of weeks. Jim Batey hopes getting his picture back in the public eye will generate some calls. "Any info that leads to his arrest, he's still worth 25 thousand dollars. That's no questions asked and nobody will ever know you called." Three-breakouts in four-years. One-guy still on the run and he could be worth 25-grand. Melissa Wagner, Action News.
