YAKIMA -- It is an illegal habit that is right out in the open.

A motel employee explains, "A week ago, we found like 50 syringes stuck in this garbage can, pipes, burnt spoons and all kinds of things. You name it, we found it.”

Yakima Police say a lot of drug activities happen in motels. The motels with the most drug activity are on North 1st Street. Police say the Tourist Motel has the biggest problem. This month alone, they have gotten more than 30 drug related calls from the place.

Tourist Motel manager Shawn Michaels says, "You can't watch everybody that comes in. People have friends that come over, you have people that will come and rent rooms, and that's just the name of the business."

He is the motel's new manager who was hired to fix the mess. Michaels has already evicted more than a dozen people. The motel is struggling to make ends meet because of the evictions, but Michaels says it'll be worth it in the long run.

"By this time next year, this place won't even look the same. It's gonna be totally changed inside and out. It's gonna be a place people are gonna wanna come to," Michaels says.

Action News will hold him to it. We have marked it on our calendar and this time next year, we will be back to see if the Tourist Motel is still Yakima's most drug infested.

Police say even though drug activity is still a problem in Yakima, drug arrests are lower this year. So far, they have made a little over 600 drug related arrests. That is a hundred less than last year's 700.
