Suspect Leads Car Chase Across State Line, Disappears in ATV
By Rudabeh Shahbazi
BENTON COUNTY-- Sheriff's deputies say Umatilla police chased a man across the state line early Sunday morning, after he refused to pull over when they caught him speeding.
Benton County Sheriff's deputies and Umatilla police chased him to a dead end near McNeary dam, where he got the jeep stuck in heavy brush. Deputies say he jumped into a waiting ATV and vanished. They did not know where the ATV came from, or why it was in the middle of an sparse field. Kathryn Franklin, who was riding a horse near the jeep later Sunday, said it was a lot of drama for the quiet area. "How in the world did it get down there," she said. It's all dirt and sage brush and swamp. It's kind of strange to see it out here in the middle of the field." Law enforcement officials were still looking for the suspect Sunday morning. Umatilla police did not return calls to confirm his identity or whether he had been caught by Sunday night. The jeep will remain buried in the brush until they can figure out how to pull it out. Deputies say it is possible the ATV was stolen and stashed in the tall grass previously, and that the suspect just happened to find it there. |
