Jail Stabbing

Jail Stabbing

By Audrey Asistio

YAKIMA -- The fourth floor of the Yakima County Jail goes into lock down. It's an action jailers needed to take after the inmate stabbing, Tuesday. It's the first one that happened this year.

But is it one too many? After all, the injured inmate was held in a maximum-security unit where jailers are always on the look-out for improvised weapons. Sergeant Gina Danielson says they do their best to prevent inmate fights, but there's only so much they could do.

"Inmates here have 24 hours a day to find things to do and they have access to certain items, but they can find anything to use for a weapon," says Danielson.

Detectives will not release what weapon were used in the stabbing.

Chief of Detectives Stew Graham tells Action News, "They weren't minor. One of the stabbings penetrated his heart."

Eighteen inmates are in that unit. Detectives say they have a suspect and are certain they will finish the investigation today. In the meantime, jailers added patrols on all jail floors and say despite this incident, they have done all they could to prevent the stabbing.

Danielson says, "This is definitely a rarity for us."

She adds that in past years, assaults and fights were an everyday thing. Now, they are down to 10 assaults or fights a month. The inmate that got stabbed is still in critical condition, but will most likely survive.
