Boise Cascade Land Going To Be Developed
By Sade Malloy
Yakima -- The old sawmill is now the site of new growth. Yakima's got a plan for the land and it includes some major development.
Stephanie Hirtle says, "I noticed that it had been closed and yeah I think that is discouraging." What once was discouraging is now at the heart of a huge new development. Dave Edler, Yakima Mayor says, "Going to transform the face of our community" Yakima just got a helping hand from the state. A grant will give the city up to a million bucks a year for the next 25 years. The city has to kick in a mil as well, so up to $50 million could be going into the area for new streets and utilities. Kathy Pratt says, "They should build an outlet mall similar to the one in Woodburn, Oregon because that brings in lots and lots of dollars." The city will carve up more than 200 acres of land into seven plots including a new shopping center, manufacturing plants and technical medical offices. New businesses that could stop other stores from leaving town. Michael Morales, Community & Economic Development says, "You look at the kind of money that Memorial Hospital and Yakima Regional are spending in this region how much of what they buy and what they need do they import here." Carol Inouye says, "When they shutdown a lot of people lost their jobs and that's a real problem in Yakima right now so we need that kind of development." A lot of jobs will come back. The city expects nearly 5,000. The major construction is about seven years away but we should start to see new roads, water and sewer systems right here at the North end of the old sawmill in 2010. |
